Abstract

Soft tissue lesions including muscle are most common causes of disability in people. For appropriate treatment of soft tissue lesions, accurate diagnosis is essential. However, the diagnosis of soft tissue lesions is not easy. The most important process in the diagnosis of soft tissue lesions is to differentiate the nociceptive source among various pain generators such as joint capsule, ligament, muscle, and bursae. Although there is no royal road to the differentiation of soft tissue lesions, functional examination by Cyriax is one of the most effective ways for this. In this review, the concept, procedure and interpretation of functional examination are briefly explained.
